A Bengali bhadralok family, four generations in the same Ballygunge bungalow, downsizing to a modern Salt Lake apartment. The challenge: preserving a lifetime of heritage while adapting to a smaller space.
Family/Business: Retired professor + adult children (3 generations residing)
From: Heritage bungalow, Ballygunge Place
To: Modern 3BHK apartment, DL Block, Salt Lake
Move size: 3BHK + additional storage items
Completed: November 2023
4 generations of accumulated belongings in a 90-year-old bungalow: teak and rosewood furniture (some too large for modern apartment), 4000+ books in family library, dozens of framed family portraits and original Bengali art, silver utensils, and deeply sentimental items. Salt Lake apartment meant downsizing decisions needed. Family wanted to preserve everything possible but needed sensitive guidance on what would fit.
Week 1 โ Inventory & Consultation: DSR project manager visited 3 times. Created room-by-room inventory of 2,800+ items. Worked with family to categorize: (1) "must move โ apartment fits," (2) "must move โ store separately," (3) "gift/donate/sell."
Week 2 โ Specialty Packing Plan: Books catalogued and archived (800 boxes of double-walled archival quality). Heritage furniture assessed โ some rosewood pieces custom-crated with wooden crates. Silver utensils packed in anti-tarnish cloth. Family portraits wrapped in acid-free paper then bubble-wrap.
Moving Day 1: 8-member crew on-site at 7 AM. Heritage teak dining table (cannot be dismantled without damaging historic joinery) carried by 6-person team through staircase to ground floor. Small trucks (2ร Eicher 14ft) used for narrow Ballygunge Place lane.
Moving Day 2: Salt Lake delivery to 6th floor apartment. Society lift booking pre-arranged. Furniture reassembly + book library re-installation per family's cataloguing preferences.
Post-Move: Storage arranged for 400 cft of items family wasn't ready to part with. Monthly rental secured.
Move completed in 2 working days. Zero damage to any heritage furniture, art, or books. Family's library perfectly re-established in new space by day 3.
"My grandfather built this bungalow. Leaving it was emotional enough โ but the DSR team treated every item like it was their own family's heritage. They didn't rush us. They gave us space to decide. And they packed books the way my father, a librarian, would have approved."
